China set to lift the ban on game consoles

China is considering lifting the ban on game consoles, established in 2000 to "safeguard the mental development of children", as reported by China Daily.

In November, PlayStation 3 from Sony received quality certification from the Chinese authorities, which gave the first clue.

"We are reviewing the policy and have done some surveys and discussions with other ministries about the possibility of opening the market for game consoles," the newspaper said an unnamed source at the Ministry of Culture. To
lift the ban, it is needed that the seven ministries sign a petition to lift that ban.

There is little arguing to the statement that Sony can earn billion of dollars if these news are true. However, the company has refused to comment on the speculations.

"Our stance towards business in China has not changed. Of course, we acknowledge China as a promising market for our business, and we are always considering and preparing business opportunities and possibilities (in the country),"
Sony Computer Entertainment spokesman, Yoshiko Uchiyama, was quoted as saying.

Last year, the local company Lenovo launched Eedoo CT510, a motion detection apparatus similar to Microsoft’s Kinect. Eedoo Lenovo marketed as a "machine for exercise and
entertainment."

With the existing ban, the consoles are at a disadvantage compared to mobile, with people who can amuse themselves with games, both designed for these displays as those played online.
