Aamer Sohail wants Shahid Afridi to be dropped from ODIs

Aamer Sohail, the former Pakistan captain, is of the opinion that the Green Shirts need to change their combination in the ICC Champions Trophy 2013, urging the team management to exclude Shahid Afridi from the One Day International (ODI) squad.

Having been dropped from the ODI squad for the tour of India, Boom Boom returned to the side for the five-match series against South Africa. The all-rounder, however, failed to make an impression with the ball and remained wicket-less in the series, although he stroked a wonderful half-century in a losing cause at Johannesburg.

For the Champions Trophy, which is going to be played in England in June, Sohail thinks that the Misbah-ul-Haq and company would not require too many spin bowling options, in the presence of two world-class limited-overs spinners, Saeed Ajmal and Mohammad Hafeez.

While speaking to Pakpassion, the former left-handed opening batsman urged Misbah to revise the team combination according to the playing conditions in England.

He said, “I think the time has come for Misbah ul Haq to decide on which options he wants in the one day side. Pakistan has Mohammad Hafeez, Shoaib Malik, Shahid Afridi and Saeed Ajmal as the spin bowling options. In England you don’t need an abundance of spinners for the Champions Trophy.“

Sohail is of the opinion that either Afridi or Shoaib Malik can find a place in the playing-11 at the same time, supporting the retention of the latter because he is more reliable with the bat according to the former captain.

“It’s a straight choice between Shahid Afridi and Shoaib Malik in the one day side as I don’t feel both of them in the one day team is working. I would go with Shoaib Malik as he is the more reliable batting option over Shahid Afridi and I think Afridi should be dropped from the one day team,” Sohail added.

Pakistan are placed in group B of the upcoming edition of the tournament along with South Africa, India and West Indies.

I agree with Aamer. Shahid Afridi has become a total failure. God gave him so much talent but he leaves his brain behind when he goes out to bat. One of the young and coming players should be taking his place in the team.
