Chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Party (PTI), Imran Khan, made a statement on Sunday, holding Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif responsible for the recent attacks on the country’s security forces.

“Maulana Fazl-ur-Rahman or Sami-ul-Haq alone cannot get the Taliban peace talks off the ground. The prime minister should take the lead in this regard”, he said while speaking at a rally.

In another statement to the media, Imran Khan said that if he was the Prime Minister, he would be leading the peace talks with the Taliban.

“Had I been Nawaz Sharif, I would have taken the charge long ago”, he said.

Imran also went on to term the Taliban a result of the American war, stating that the militant group was not at the fore till 2006.

Speaking about Dr Shakil Afridi, who helped the US forces track down and kill Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, Imran Khan said that Afridi was a spy.

“Will a Pakistani spy be set free if he is caught in US? I don’t think so. Same goes for Afridi”, he said.

The PTI chairman has been a staunch supporter of peace talks with the Taliban and has been urging all political parties to take positive steps.
