Parliamentary Committee’s recommendations may too hot

The government will have to take hard and bold decisions if it follows the recommendations of the Parliamentary Committee on National Security (PCNS) with regard to Pakistan’s relations with the U.S. and NATO in terms of war on terror.

Reports say that the recommendations finalised by the committee would not only be tough for the U.S. and NATO but for the Pakistani government too.

A meeting of the PCNS was held in Parliament House with Senator Raza Rabbani in the chair while the finance minister and secretaries of Finance and Economic Affairs Division briefed the committee about what Pakistan had financially achieved and lost during
the war against terrorism.

The government will also have to make public its all agreements with the U.S. and NATO in terms of war on terror. According to the reports, Ministry of Defence had nine agreements with NATO and the U.S. but had never shared the details even with other ministries,
departments and Parliament.

The committee observed that Pakistan would not have required financial assistance and loan from the U.S. if the fair money was charged against the NATO supply line and other services in the war.

On the other hand, Jamat-e-Islami and Jamiat Ulem-e-Islam (JUI-F) have decided to make a demand in the parliament for permanently stop the NATO supply line, they added.

Briefing the media after the meeting, Senator Raza Rabbani said that Minister of Finance Dr. Hafeez Sheikh and his team briefed the panel about country’s financial situation.

Raza Rabbani said the recommendations would be given final shape before submitting them to the prime minister for presenting in joint sitting of parliament.

He said that the committee would have final meeting with the officials of ministries of foreign affairs and defence on Tuesday to have their opinion about the recommendations.

Rabbani said that the finance minister and his team also informed the committee about the various figures of the economy and the impact of war on terror.

To a query, he said that the committee had asked the financial team to brief the members on existing economic situation and dependence over the U.S. European Union (EU) and other countries.

He made it clear that all the recommendations will be finalized keeping in view the interest of the country and security priorities. “Our recommendations may be tough for someone but certainly these will be in the best interest of the country and the nation,”
he maintained.
