The menus have the same yellow-over blue colour combination that was seen in previous models. This no non-sense scheme is efficient as well and the ease-of-use is at its prime.

The Viera Market has a wide range of applications both free and priced. However, the user has to have an account to log in to the system to download even the free ones. The applications on the VT50 range from NetFlix, Hulu, HBO Go, and Pandora to free games.

Moreover, there is live television and social network applications with live feeds like Facebook and Twitter. The Viera Cast merges Live TV and Facebook/Twitter into one page, which is a smart move.

Moreover, the company has announced that it will shortly be including MySpace and Disney Books to group in addition to applications for iOS and Android remote controls.

When it comes to hardware, the new VT50 is best in the line. It has a dual-core processor and a plasma flat panel display technology. The Infinite Black Ultra Panel with a new predischarge spark is also in the package to make the already blacks even more blacker. There is a louvre panel in front of the screen to ward off external light, resulting in brighter display in well-lit rooms.

There are two remote controls included with the TV set. One is a conventional bar studded with buttons from channel select to menus. However, they are intuitively grouped for easy access. There is also a dedicated Help button that launches the soft copy of the manual for quick help. However, content is limited and for a deeper insight the hard copy in the box has to be consulted.

The other remote is more futuristic. Not only does it have a smaller footprint but also a track-pad for moving the cursor on the screen. The sensitivity of the pad is segregated into three options, Minimum, Medium and Maximum. However, the efficiency is still far from the laptop touch-pads and is sometimes annoyance than convenience.

Speaking of annoyance, the browser is another feature that rests on Achilles’ heel. It takes time in minutes to load even the less flashy pages. Moreover, browser-based Flash player sometimes works at snail’s pace and most of the time not in the mood to load videos at all.

Conclusion

In sum, the new VT50 is better than the current herd of televisions in the market, even than its brothers and sisters from Panasonic. However, the real competition will be offered by the likes of OLEDs that are planned to launched in the latter half of the year.
