President Barack Obama re-elected president of the United States

Barack Obama, the candidate of change and hope, won re-election by overcoming four years of economic discontent with a mix of political populism and electoral math.

He, who became the first black U.S. president, defeated Republican Mitt Romney. After his victory, he tweeted, “We’re all in this together. That’s how we campaigned, and that’s who we are. Thank you. –bo.”

Seemingly not a minute leading up to this moment has been easy for Obama since his historic victory in 2008—but he came, he governed, he campaigned for reelection and, ultimately, he conquered.

His victory against Romney earned four more years in the White House and vowing to usher in a brighter future for the country and its people, many of whom struggled mightily in his first term.

Barak Obama has once again been elected President of the United States by securing 275 votes out of 538 Electoral College votes.

Obama won important swing states Michigan and Pennsylvania, among others and maintained a slender yet important lead in Ohio and Florida.

Challenger Mitt Romney gave him a tough fight after he wrested Indiana and may even also win Virginia but that may not be enough.

Beginning more than a year ago, Obama and his advisers cast the president as a champion of middle-class opportunity pitted against an opposition party more determined to protect preferences for the wealthy.

The Democrat claimed victory following what turned out to be a relatively comfortable election count which saw him win many of the key swing states.

Jubilation spread in Chicago, where the President is due to address a victory rally shortly, as he clinched victory by taking the crunch state of Ohio.

Until last month, the Republican was considered to have little chance of ousting Mr Obama after his campaign was damaged by a string of gaffes.

This was despite the president’s approval ratings slumping and many of his own supporters turning on him for failing to deliver on his message of change and hope from 2008.

But a lacklustre performance by Mr Obama in the first television debate turned the race on its head and Mr Romney surged back in the polls.

The incumbent was much stronger in the second and third debates but it was not enough to derail the Romney campaign and the two men were neck-and-neck.

Better than expected employment figures last week helped bolster the Democrat and then fate also played a hand when Hurricane Sandy roared in.

The superstorm forced Mr Romney into the shade as campaigning was suspended and Obama returned to presidential duties, helping him in the dying days of the race.
