Former president Pervez Musharraf urges Pakistan, India to work for Kashmir resolution

Former president Pervez Musharraf has said that the Pakistan army wants resolution of the dispute with India, adding that it was important to resolve the root cause of dispute between the two countries and the relations forward.

 

Addressing the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit in New Delhi, the former military dictator said that it was important to resolve the root cause of dispute between the two countries and the relations forward.

 

Pervez Musharraf stated that some people suggest taking the socio-economic relations ahead, keeping the political issues aside for the time being is the way forward, but in his opinion both political and socio-economic relations should be taken up simultaneously.

 

The former Pakistan president said that there was a need to open our eyes to the new reality and cooperate for deprived people of two countries.

 

The former president said that water dispute between two countries had seeds of confrontation and the two countries should adhere to the Indus water treaty. He stressed on the need to undo military standoff between the third and sixth largest army having both conventional and nuclear capabilities.

 

He noted, “Compromise and accommodation should come from the bigger and the stronger and people interpreted it negatively if it came from the “smaller and weaker. The Kashmir issue gave birth to extremism in Pakistan.”

 

In his opinion, Pakistan was ready for mutual, proportional reduction of forces. He also said that the Afghan situation was also a very sensitive one. He said that India should avoid any attempt to create anti-Pakistan Afghanistan.

 

The former Pakistan president said that being a big country India should take the lead in improving ties and show that it has a big heart.

 

Stressing on easing visa regime, increasing people to people contact and improving communication facilities between the two countries, he urged on the need of intelligence agencies of the two countries to stop damaging the other nation.

 

He also expressed hopes that the leadership of both sides will rise to the occasion and normalize ties, with India taking the lead.

 

This international conference organized by Hindustan Times, was continued since November 16, inaugurated by Thailand’s former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatira. This international event would give the roadmap for the peaceful and developing South-Asia.
