Decline in the female population causes the ‘wife sharing’ dilemma in India – International

Asia’s third largest growing economy, India, isn’t growing too well as far as humanity and morals are concerned. India is pretty much the only country in the world that has a male population more than it’s female population. Whether it is a fact to boast about or is it a dilemma, many who are considered wise across the world have been unable to decide.

The latest dilemma caused due to this one in the world fact is ‘wife-sharing’. India’s rural areas are suffering with this rising issue. As time passes, more and more cases of this most obscene form of human behavior tend to come forth. It is however; a tad bit surprising that such a monumental issue has only recently been discovered.

According to reports ignorant villagers across the less known villages in India’s beautiful countryside are known to practice wife sharing. The term refers to a man sharing his wife with other men, which most commonly includes his own brothers or even in some cases, his friends. Sharing, in this case, refers to a man allowing other men to sexually exploit his wife.

The issue was brought into light after a series of very tragic events gained popularity recently. It has been reported that a woman, a native of Baghpat in North India, was victim to this rising predicament. The woman, who is known by the name of Munni,
revealed that she was shared by her husband with her husband’s two brothers.

While talking to a reporter the woman was quoted as saying:

“My husband and his parents said I had to share myself with his brothers. They took me whenever they wanted — day or night. When I resisted, they beat me with anything at hand,”

Munni, who has three sons from her husband and his brothers, has not filed a police against her so-called family.

According to Social workers  many years of abortions of female babies in the very patriarchal Indian rural culture is one of the main reasons to a  noticeable decline in the population of women in some parts of India. Baghpat is one of those areas and is known for increasing cases rape, human trafficking and the emergence of “wife-sharing” amongst brothers.

Aid workers have revealed that the female foeticide practiced by a majority ignorant folk across India has lead to an increase in males and a decrease in females. It can be safely assumed that a traditional preference for boys has always been a part of the sub-continent.

Bhagyashri Dengle, executive director of children’s charity Plan India has stated that:

“We are already seeing the terrible impacts of falling numbers of females in some communities.”

“We have to take this as a warning sign and we have to do something about it or we’ll have a situation where women will constantly be at risk of kidnap, rape and much, much worse.”
