U.S. resumes spy attacks in Pakistan

With a couple of missile strikes in the last two days, the U.S. drone campaign has been reactivated in Pakistan. The drone strikes remained suspended for two months after a NATO air-strike that killed 24 Pakistani troops in Slala check posts, Mohmand Agency.

In order to mend worsening ties between Pakistan and United States after the November 26 attacks, the Americans did not use the technology to target Taliban in the tribal areas of Pakistan.

Pakistan and the U.S. were sitting on different pages in terms of war on terror, as the former has suspended the supply services to NATO forces, battling in Afghanistan.

The situation is quite complex as the drones resumed at a time when Parliamentary Committee on National Security (PCNS) has finalized its proposal to define the new recommendations in terms of revising ties with America and allied forces. In the next phase, the parliament will hold debate on the new terms and conditions.

What instigated the U.S. to reactivate the drone campaign to set off another wave of outrage among the masses against America? Most of the U.S. officials acknowledged that Washington could not win the war on terror without the support of Islamabad.

Hence the resumption of spy attacks in tribal region will not assist in settling the ties between the two states. At the same time, it will also raise questions about the sincerity of the U.S. in making the relations normal.

The recommencement of  drone strikes reveals double standards of the American, as on one had they are holding dialogues with Taliban while on the other they are targeting them (Taliban) with increasing numbers of drones.

The lull of 60 days did not make any change in the American governing policy. It seems that they used the period to calm down tempers in Pakistan while placing necessary equipment in Afghanistan to continue the drone strikes.

Without any doubt, the U.S. spy attacks will further deteriorate the situation in the region. By targeting civilians along with rarely high value targets, it will ignite the locals to increase their activities inside Pakistan.

Prior to fix new terms of future engagements with United States, we should press all stakeholders including parliament to examine all the pros and cons of the friendship.

Why is not Pakistani Air Force shooting down US drones? Drones fly very slow.
