Microsoft’s Windows 8 might have the potential to compete with Apple’s iOS – Part 1

The tablet market has been dominated by Apple since release of its first tablet, the original iPad, in 2010. There came a number of players thriving for success but only one could survive the battle and that is Android. Although Google’s mobile operating system is still in the market but its condition is miserable. Android has been a success in the smartphone market but tablet-industry has spared no mercy on the open-sourced OS.

Even in the presence of a host of company that boast Android in their slates, Apple has single-handedly beaten them to the punch. Deutsche Bank’s Chris Whitmore added his experience this week in a research note below a heading entitled “No iPad-killer in this bunch.”

“In the past 12 months, the tablet market has been flooded with a slew of Android-based devices; none of which have matched the success of the iPad. From a hardware perspective, it is clear most offerings are ‘me-too’ with little to no differentiation.”

Whitmore continues. “We continue to believe these Android-based ‘iPad-killers’ will fall short. Many [device makers] seem to agree and are shifting their efforts on Win8 based tablets, which should ship in 2H12 (second half 2012).”

However, there is one player who still has to enter the market and despite is disappointing performance in the smartphone industry, it might show the potential in the segment of tablets. It is Microsoft’s Windows 8 that is expected to be released in second half of calendar 2012.

Though Windows Phone has been Microsoft’s Achilles Heel to date, the Windows 8 might bring some redemption to the company in mobile device market.

MS launched the Beta version of Win 8 last year for expert views and reviews and so far the OS has seen all positive omens. However, the final verdict can only be issued once the full version hits the market.
