Microsoft’s Windows 8 might have the potential to compete with Apple’s iOS – Part 2

Windows 8 has incorporated a new interface that is solely developed to cater to the tablet industry although it can also be installed on desktops and laptops. The new operating system offers both Metro interface, for the tablets, and traditional windowed interface, for desktops and laptops.

However, company claims that Win 8 is target at the post-desktop market. And to justify the claim, Microsoft has introduced a new file system that will replace older New Technology File System (NTFS) that first came in Windows NT released in 2000. According to the company, this new system, called Resilient File System or ReFS, is faster and secure.

So far, the reviews have revealed that the Metro interface is smooth and free of stutter. The colour combinations and customizations are good but this new interface is limited to just start menu. However, that is expected to expand its wings on other parts of operating system.

Tablets are the main target of this new OS but all-in-one desktops and touch screen laptops are also anticipated to embrace it.

However, that being said, this new venture that Microsoft is planning to undertake has more address than a mere interface. The contemporary tech market is not living merely on the sales and graphic gismos but the after-sale services especially applications are very important as well.

Although Android offers a slew of apps but the performance of the operating system itself is not worthwhile. On the other hand, Win 8 has received positive response in performance but will the company be able to sway developers to develop applications for the new operating system. Apple has a much bigger pool of developers and more and more are pouring in every hour.

The main competition between MS and Apple will on applications front and Microsoft has a memorable experience from Windows Phone, that is a better operating system in every respect but the lack of applications fends buyers at bay.

Microsoft might have to work harder to lure more developers to Win 8 if they want to survive the  ultra-competitive tablet market. As for company to embrace the new OS, Samsung, Dell and HP have already agreed to launch new Windows 8 tablets in latter half of the year.
