Has the iPhone 4S really turned into a 4G device? – The real story unveiled – Part 2

In other words, the iPhone 4S offers a slight speed boost over the iPhone 4 and other 3G devices. But I wouldn’t say it’s significant enough to put it in the same class as devices operating on a 4G LTE network or even devices operating on the newest and fastest versions of HSPA+.

But is AT&T’s 4G claim for the iPhone 4S deceptive in the legal sense? Not really. The short answer to your question is that 4G is merely a marketing term. It’s like calling Vitamin Water a health food. Marketers are allowed to call it whatever they want, but the truth is that Vitamin Water is full of sugar, which isn’t all that healthy. And AT&T’s HSPA+ version of 4G is also not what I or most other experts would consider true 4G.

The history behind the evolution of such marketing is quite lengthy but I will try to explain as shortly and interestingly as I can.

It all started with the upgrade to the 3G network. The network is offered on both CDMA and GSM networks but there is a slight difference in the performance of the internet on both networks. The new evolved HSPA (High Speed Packet Access) is actually an upgrade to the HSPA which is the 3G network and on paper the HSPA+ offers a more speedy data packet service. The closest is the LTE and WiMax service to the 4G networking.

LTE and WiMax have been considered 4G is that they are based on a new type of network technology that is more efficient than previous 3G technologies. LTE and WiMax use what’s called orthogonal frequency-division multiple access or OFDMA modulation.

Remains the question of why 4G moniker attached to the service for the HPSA+? International Telecommunications Union, an international telecom standards setting body within the United Nations actually sets up the standards for such networks.
