Samsung released the most awaited smartphone of the year at the company’s event in London on May 3. The new handset is named Samsung Galaxy S III, the new successor in the Galaxy S line from the Korean company.

As do many awaited gadgets, Galaxy S III was surrounded by rumours since the start of 2012. The company reserved the right to remain silent at both Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas and Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, further beefing up the craving of new handset.

Due to Galaxy S II’s huge success last year, the company planned to raise the curtains on this new device at a separate event. Though everyone in the tech community had the idea that Samsung will unveil the new iteration in the Galaxy S line, nobody had any knowledge of what it will be packed with. It was mostly speculation and most of them proved to be true.

As expected the new Galaxy S III comes with a bigger 4.8-inch Super-AMOLED screen, with an HD display resolution (1,280×720 pixels). Though the screen has been enlarged, the footprint is still a hair above 5 inches, with a thin bezel surrounding the screen.

The hands-on review of the device revealed that it weighs 4.7 ounces, giving it a solid weight to carry. S III is 0.6 ounces heavier than its predecessor from last year. At 0.3 inches, it is slightly thicker than the S II as well.

The globally unlocked version showcased at the event is equipped with 4G-HSPA+ technology, however, the US and Canada version is said to be 4G LTE enabled.

At the back is an 8-mega pixels with full HD 1080p video capturing capabilities. Like the Galaxy Nexus, this new handset has zero shutter lag and takes sharp photos almost instantly. Moreover, its multi-shot mode suggests the user to select the best out of the burst by suggesting the best in the pack.

The phone comes in two colours, pebble blue and white, and three storage capacities, 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB. It also has the option of expandable memory with a micro-SD card, up to 64 GB.

The phone is set to hit the markets in summers and US will receive a 4G LTE version in the same period.
