US-Pakistan relationship treading a thin line, very little done to strength the cord – Part 1

United States’ relationship with Pakistan is souring by the passing day. It is at the lowest in the last two decades mainly because of two reasons; the blockade of NATO supply line and the increased number drone attacks in Pakistani territory.

In the light of recent events, it seems that both sides are least interested in bringing the conflict to an end. US President Barack Obama has ordered a swift increase in the attacks on alleged Taliban stronghold in Pakistan. However, there are still some things that are left unclear by both parties.

The US has halted the funding to Pakistan and there are almost $3 Billion waiting to be reimbursed to Pakistan for their allegiance in war on terror. On the other hand Pakistan has blocked the NATO supply route to Afghanistan that alone is costing the US in Billions on monthly basis.

Time and time again both countries release a statement that further aggravates the already aching relationship. Pakistan was touted the most cooperating ally in the war on terror but a series of unfortunate events, especially on Pakistan’s part, have led to such decision from both countries that have brought the relationship to an all-time low.

The US has been attacking alleged Taliban and other terrorist bases and residence of terrorist leaders at the Pakistani western region that borders with Afghanistan. The exponential increment in the rate of drone attacks in the region has hit Pakistan’s integrity the most.

The airstrike followed by a covert operation on Osama bin Laden’s residence in Abbottabad last year brought the relationship to a strife that has been aggravated by a number of disagreements and hurting statements from government officials.

“We are reaching the limits of our patience, and for that reason it’s extremely important that Pakistan take action” to crack down on armed groups based there that attack American and coalition forces in Afghanistan, U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said yesterday in Kabul.
