Apple does away with YouTube app in the upcoming iOS 6

Apple is nipping on the heels of Google. In the latest developments in the Google-Apple lover affair, the latter dropped YouTube app from its iOS 6 beta bandwagon. Furthermore, a spokesperson confirmed that the final version will also be without the pre-installed YouTube application.

“Our licensing to include the YouTube app in iOS has ended,” said the spokesperson. “Customers can use YouTube in the Safari browser and Google is working on a new YouTube app to be in the App Store.”

On the other hand, a Google spokesperson’s reply left much to be desired. When asked if there is indeed a new app coming out for iOS 6, the spokesperson said in a statement, “We are working with Apple to ensure we have the best possible YouTube experience for iOS users.”

YouTube app is one of the first applications to adorn the Apple OS and then iOS.  Apple collaborated with the search engine to come up with an app that will not use Adobe Flash. Instead it would use Apple’s own media player, Quick Player.

To date YouTube remains one of the most used application on iOS and has remained pre-installed no matter what the version. However, the end of licensing period came as a surprise. There may by more than meets the eye in case of Apple-Google ‘friendship.’

A couple of months ago Apple dropped Google Maps from the new iOS version released at Apple’s annual developers’ conference, WWDC. The gesture had two fold motif, to show-off the company’s own mapping app and to show Google their deepest love in the technology industry.

The app has been removed from iOS, which means no YouTube pre-installed on iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. However, the application is still available on Apple TV, mainly because of the reason that it is one of the major sources of video content on the internet.

On the other hand, iOS users will have to wait for the standalone app’s release or they can make do with the mobile website also available on mobile Safari.
