Apple television not close to a release, iPad Mini expected to launch in calendar 2012 4th quarter

Steve Jobs was quoted in his Walter Isaacson-biography, Steve Jobs, saying that he has cracked the code for televisions. However, it seems quite unlikely that the television, rumoured as iTV, will be out this Fall, almost a year after his death.

Apple senior vice president of Internet software and services, Eddy Cue, recently had a conversation with Pacific Crest Securities analyst Andy Hargreaves.

According to Hargreaves, the television is very unlikely to come forth this year at least. “An Apple television appears extremely unlikely in the near term,” Hargreaves said in a research note Friday.

“The key problems in the television market are the poor quality of the user interface and the forced bundling of pay TV content, in our view,” he wrote. “While Apple could almost certainly create a better user interface, Mr. Cue’s commentary suggested that this would be an incomplete solution from Apple’s perspective unless it could deliver content in a way that is different from the current multichannel pay TV model.”

The lack of television content offering to Apple has become big hurdle in the launch of the device. It is quite possible that the prototype model has been finished and finalized but the final product is subject to availability of the content in a newer manner.

The sloppy interface on some of the top televisions in the world has been another hurdle in the success of smart TVs. Apple might be able to take the case handily.

Though the television is not expected anytime soon, another Apple product has been in the news for quite some time now and is expected to show off in October. Dubbed iPad Mini, the smaller version of the flagship tablet from Apple will have a 7-inch display. It is likely to compete with Amazon’s Kindle Fire and recently announced Nexus 7 from Google. iPad Mini is expected to hit the shelves in October with a price tag of $299 for the base model.

The release of the smaller slate is also rumoured to replace iPod Touch for good.
