New iOS 6: Over 200 new features, more interactive Siri and Facebook integration – Part 3

As demonstrated in presentation on its official launch and iPhone 5’s launch, it gets the users everything from latest movies playing in theatres, favourite shows on TV, latest sports scores to booking reservations in restaurants.

Another new feature iOS 6 houses is the Passbook, Apple’s attempt against NFC-based (near-field communications) Google Wallet. The only difference is that it does not use NFC. The app stores all the e-tickets, passes and cards at one place, which clears the hassle of finding and collecting them from one place. Again it is not the first of its kind app, but its integration to one of the most used operating system has its perks.

The app uses the bar codes and QR codes on the screen for scanning and pays bills, in case of cards, lets the user pass through subways, in case of passes, and lets them watch movies and games, in case of tickets.

The app also reminds the user of delays in time-bound tickets and passes and also lets them know any changes in routes, for example, a change in Gate No. on an airport terminal. It also pops up automatically when the user is near the destination, without even touching the lock screen. The swift use is augmented by the graphic shredding of the ticket when the user deletes it after use.

Facebook has been integrated as a part of iOS 6, as was Twitter a year ago. The new OS now lets the user add Facebook account links to the contact list, add birthdays on calendars and maps and lets Siri update a status on the website, as mentioned before.

Facebook integration comes concurrent with Facebook’s own update to the application for new operating system.

In a nutshell, the new OS is a far better upgrade to last year’s iOS 5 but it still has a lot of work to do before becoming a game changer. The interface remains the same as the original version, which needs to have some makeover in the next 12 months. Android and the likes tweak up the interface every other year and people change so do their preferences.
