PIA Air-ambulance ready to fly Malala abroad

Over the directives of President Asif Ali Zardari, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has completed arrangements for shifting Malala Yousafzai to Dubai for medical treatment, who was shot in the head by cowardly militants in Swat.

Managing Director PIA Junaid Yunus while speaking to the media said a makeshift air-ambulance is ready to airlift critically injured Malala to Dubai at the Peshawar Airport. He, however, said a medical board is yet to make a decision on when she should be flown abroad for further medical treatment.

Earlier, President Asif Ali Zardari issued directives for making arrangements to take critically injured Malala abroad for neurosurgery.

Interior Minister Rehman Malik also issued the order after the medical board of the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) Peshawar, where Malala Yousafzai’s detailed check-up was conducted, recommended that the 14-year old girl be taken abroad for treatment.

According to some reports she successfully underwent an operation at CMH to remove the bullet.

“The bullet has been successfully removed from her head after five-hour long operation, however, she is still in critical condition and could be shifted to abroad,” Dr Mumtaz, a neurosurgeon, told reporters. He added that they were hopeful that Malala’s condition will be improved in next few days.

According to reports, Malala had suffered a serious cerebrovascular injury after a bullet fired by the Taliban gunman penetrated her skull and had stopped dangerously short of her spinal cord.

A team of senior neurosurgeons has been setup at combined military hospital (CMH) which will take the final decision to shift Malala abroad.

Malala won international recognition for highlighting Taliban atrocities in Swat with a blog for the BBC three years ago, when the Islamist militants led by radical cleric Maulana Fazlullah burned girls’ schools and terrorized the valley.

She received the first-ever national peace award from the Pakistani government last year, and was nominated for the International Children’s Peace Prize by advocacy group Kids Rights Foundation in 2011.
