Worldwide sales of computers totaled 89.8 million units in the fourth quarter, representing a significant drop of 6.4% and their worst ever run in the past five years, as indicated by the consulting IDC.

The sales will reportedly fall down deeper than expected, as earlier forecasts pointed to a fall of 4.4% in this market.

The consultancy has indicated that, although the quarter began with the launch of Windows 8, its impact could not change the slow demand for PCs, which is hindered both by competition from other devices such as the current economic
problems.

IDC has stated that the poor fourth-quarter results were not quite surprising keeping in mind how many challenges the computer market faced in 2012.

Because of this both the Consumers and PC manufacturers including the distribution channels have changed their mind to buy or sell desktop computer in order to think about adapting to the changing world of technology including
tablets and smartphones.

Among manufacturers, the biggest drop was faced by Acer, which sold just 6.9 million units, a decrease in sales of 28.2%, followed by Dell, whose sales fell 20.8%, to 9, 5000000, and HP, where decreased by 0.6%, to 15 million.
Meanwhile, Lenovo’s sales increased 8.2%, to 14.1 million, and the Asus 5.6% to 6.5 million.

In the whole of 2012, worldwide sales of personal computers in 2012 totaled 352.42 million units, representing a decrease of 3.2% compared to 363.89 million units sold in 2011. Hewlett-Packard remained the top spot in 2012 with
sales of 58.13 million units, representing a decline of 6.7% year on year and a market share of 16.5%.
