Samsung and its strategy with a host of tablets – Part 1

Samsung reached an agreement with Google on a strategic partnership in tablets and smartphones, where Google will provide the mobile operating system for the devices and Samsung will be responsible for the hardware. Over the span of two years both companies have produced a slew of smartphones and tablets.

Samsung single-handedly fought a good fight with Apple on the smartphone front and its sales results were impressive and promising in the last three quarters. However, its tablets have been on Achilles Heel ever since two companies joined hands.

One of the main reason for such an abrupt response to Samsung’s larger devices is the fact that the company has waterlogged the market with numerous tablets and every year, they are replaced by newer versions. As of yet, Samsung is dealing in the tablet market with seven different slates, not one not two but ‘seven’.

Not only these devices are complex to remember but the market strategy that Samsung has undertaken in the last two years is unfathomable.

n my experience, the pattern typically goes like this. Samsung announces Tablet A, featuring some new hotness and the unique ability to feed your pets while you’re on vacation. The announced price is about $xxx more than you were hoping for and it’s available exclusively from Carrier AA either on a two-year contract, or at an absurdly high contract-free price. The excitement generates buzz for Samsung and gets people motivated to visit their local carrier store. Then, once the buzz has run its course, Samsung releases a Wi-Fi-only version of the product to considerably less fanfare while soon thereafter announcing Tablet B, exclusively for Carrier BB.

Currently, the seven tablets that the company has pushed into the market range from 5.3-inch screens to 10.1-inch screens. These devices are not only difficult to understand but there features are also like math for a student of arts.
