Ultrabooks: The concept in its nascent stages is already diminishing – Part 1
Wednesday, April 4th, 2012 5:59:36 by Usman KhalidIt was until Consumer Electronics Show 2012 that the ultrabooks meant a super slim laptop incorporating a feather weight existence, with optical drive and an SSD storage device. However, the event showcased a slew of new laptops that had none of these features and still were marketed as Ultrabooks, example Samsung Series 5 Ultra.
This however, is only a single example to quote as the new line of ultrabooks contain a number of such devices that might not even look like an ultrabook.
The Samsung Series 5 for example, packs an optical drive, a platter hard drive with an auxiliary SSD 16 GB drive, and is fatter than the rest of the bunch we saw in 2011. With this kind of new release, the very concept of Ultrabooks has been diluted.
The idea was pitched as an entirely new laptop category, although the name “Ultrabook” was a trademarked Intel marketing term, and the systems that were going to use it had to meet a series of Intel-set system requirements.
In fact, Intel even set aside $300 million to help PC makers develop these new systems, saying in August 2011 that it would “invest in companies building hardware and software technologies focused on enhancing how people interact with Ultrabooks such as through sensors and touch, achieving all-day usage through longer battery life, enabling innovative physical designs, and improved storage capacity.”
