Ultrabooks: The concept in its nascent stages is already diminishing – Part 2
Wednesday, April 4th, 2012 5:59:21 by Usman KhalidBut both Intel and PC makers have released a number of new laptops with the Ultrabook moniker attached to them, that the users have ended up confused which one is an ultrabook and which one is just laptop.
After the release of Macbook Air by Apple in 2007, the concept was to introduce Windows-based laptops that had slim structure and weighed a few pounds, as in 2 or 3 pounds maximum. The concept was revolutionary and the devices we saw last year proved the premise that the new technology is worth investing in.
The success of Macbook Air gave birth to the concept of Ultrabooks and it also proved that the customers can live without optical drives and dedicated graphics cards. They longevity of the battery life was just the think they needed. Although PCs could not match the same 7-hour benchmark set by the Air, they were a good bargain for the money paid.
On the other hand, the monotony of the Macbook Air’s design was killed by the ultrabooks with very attractive designs from Toshiba in Z835 Portege, HP in Folio and Envy and IBM in Lenovo U-series. These systems, from companies such as Acer, Lenovo, Toshiba, and Asus, came off very well in our initial reviews and we were surprisingly impressed with the platform, especially as prices declined, offering buyers systems with 128GB SSD drives for as little as $799.
