Apple releases iPhone 5 boasting a bigger screen, supporting 4G LTE – Part 2

The iPhone 5 boasts a new in-cell crystal display technology, which has the touch sensors and display pixels fused on the same sheet, reducing the width of the display panel. That makes room for a thicker and denser battery. The slimmer screen has helped the new phone become thinner and lighter than the immediate predecessor. It measures 0.30 inches in breadth against 0.37 inches of the iPhone 4S. Moreover, the new phone sheds some weight as well. At 3.95 ounces it is 22 percent lighter than the 4S and it is the most prominent change in a frisk inspection.

Under the hood is a thicker and denser battery. The company did not shell out the details but claimed the following new repertoire for the new charge source: the users will get 8 hours of 3G talk time, 8 hours of 3G browsing, 8 hours of LTE browsing, 10 hours of Wi-Fi browsing, 10 hours of video playback, 40 hours of music playback, and 225 hours of standby time.

Residing underneath it is a more powerful A6 processor, an upgrade over the A5 chip in the 4S. Though there was no official word on the number of cores, much less the increment in them, Apple did claim that it is twice as faster and 22 percent smaller than A5. The new processor will load web pages 2.1 times and Music app 1.9 times faster than the 4S.

Among others is the new 4G LTE support in the iPhone 5. The handset will work on AT&T, Sprint and Verizon’s 4G LTE network in the US. While there are a number of other 4G networks all around the world, it will work on HSPA+ and 3G EV-DO networks if LTE is not available.

The rear-end camera remains at 8-megapixels with the same 1080p video recording support but the shock adjustment has been changed. The users can also capture stills while recording a video. The front-facing camera gets a boost to 720p video recording and now FaceTime will also be able to run via 3G networks.

The dock connector has been shrunk to all-digital 8-pin jack, which is exponentially smaller than the previous 30-pin connector. It also makes up room for other components to fit in.

The phone is priced the same as 4S: 16GB is $199, the 32GB $299, and the 64GB $399. It will be released on September 21 in eight countries including the US, the UK and Canada. Others are likely to follow in the latter part of the month.
